What is BioPRYN®es?

It is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that determines estrone sulfate concentrations in horses, which can be used to determine pregnancy status 70 days after breeding. It can also be used to evaluate fetal viability once the pregnancy is established. Gelding males will not have estrone sulfate in the blood. This test can assure they are geldings and not cryptochids. Concentration of estrone sulfate is low in serum of geldings and non-pregnant mares. Estrone sulfate gradually increases to a comfortable detectable level in the mare’s plasma by Day 70 of gestation. From this time forward concentration continued to increase and remained significantly higher than that found in the non-pregnant mare until the last two weeks of pregnancy. Due to this high concentration in plasma, it is possible to measure estrone sulfate as evidence of pregnancy in the mare. The veterinarian or owner draws at least 3 cc of blood sample from the jugular vein. A red-topped vacuum tube is used and is labeled with the ID number of the animal. It is important to draw samples with fresh needles and tubes to avoid cross-contamination between animals. Needles and tubes can be obtained from veterinarians or veterinarian supply companies. Samples of serum or blood are then shipped to BioTracking, LLC. The test is run every other week at the BioTracking laboratory in Moscow, Idaho. Samples received by Thursday of the testing week will be run that week. Samples received later will be run the next testing week. Reports will be made by 5 pm on Friday by Phone, Fax or email depending upon the preference of the recipient
